The public tender for the construction of the Alameda de Cartes Park was launched by GO Porto – the municipal management and works company, on Wednesday.Ā

The new park, located in the parish of CampanhĆ£, will connect several strategic points, responding to the appeals from the populations and promoting the qualification and cohesion of the territory through nature-based solutions.

This intervention includes an area located at the interface of the neighbourhoods of FalcĆ£o, Cerco and Lagarteiro, with a connection to the Parque Oriental. With this project, it will be possible to stop having informal stretches used by the community, counteracting the adversities of the existing slopes and finding the best solutions to the fragmentation that road infrastructures impose. Access to parks, schools, equipment and services will be facilitated, creating spaces with reception and meeting areas, recreation, as well as spaces for the promotion of biodiversity and enjoyment by people.

The construction work is the result of a widely participated and inclusive project, in which the populations of the areas covered played a fundamental role in identifying the needs.

The Alameda de Cartes Park will create a greater functional and spatial cohesion of the urban network, connecting the referred neighbourhoods to strategic points of the city, in the context of priority action in the eastern area of the city, where very relevant projects and interventions for its development are rooted, namely the Intermodal Terminal, the PraƧa da Corujeira or the former Slaughterhouse of Porto.

Initially, the Porto City Council set up a working group with the participation of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), the Research Centre on Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO), the University of Coimbra (UC), Give U Design and Art (GUDA), the Centre for Social Studies (CES) and the municipal company Domus Social.

Subsequently, the development of the project for the park was managed and coordinated by GO Porto and involved the Municipal Department of Planning and Environmental Management of the Porto City Council, Domus Social, CIBIO and the Department of Architecture of the UC, in addition to the development of the specialty projects by the design office SOPSEC – Sociedade de PrestaĆ§Ć£o de ServiƧos de Engenharia Civil, S.A..

With this intervention, the Municipality intends to create a green park of public access, multifunctional and inclusive, able to improve the quality of life of local populations; develop a network of pedestrian circulation, promoting soft mobility; mitigate the impacts of road structures; preserve nature and promote ecological dynamics; and optimize pedestrian circulation, defining paths of lower slope.
