Enhancing the integration of Nature-Based Solutions in cities through digital technologies
In a recently published paper URBiNAT researcher Chiara Farinea writes about the innovative thinking and collaborative spirit that define the URBiNAT project. Through her research, Farinea considers how digital technologies can play a pivotal role in amplifying the effectiveness and integration of NBS within the urban fabric. By harnessing the power of data analytics, visualization tools, and digital simulations, cities can more effectively plan, implement, and monitor Nature-Based Solutions, ultimately maximizing their benefits for both the environment and urban residents.
During the last decades a growing awareness about the effects of pollution on our planet and its inhabitants has led to a demand for a new environmental sensitivity in urban planning. Nature-Based Solutions have the potential to enhance the liveability and prosperity of cities, providing ecosystems services (Millennium Ecosystems Assessment, 2005). The paper explores pathways towards a progressive knowledge construction to shape a future in which NBS are largely integrated in our buildings and public space thanks to the use of digital technologies and design, transforming our cities into healthy, productive and collaborative environments.
This paper, authored by Chiara Farinea of the Advanced Architecture Group, Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), Spain. IAAC is an URBiNAT partner mainly focused on the development of the URBiNAT NBS Catalogue.
