URBiNAT showcases methods and NBS concepts at the Festival of the New European Bauhaus
9, 10, 11 June 2022. For the first Festival of the New European Bauhaus, our international and interdisciplinary consortium interacted with participants and visitors to share some of the creative and innovative results that were achieved by engaging with local communities to imagine and build together healthier cities for a sustainable and inclusive future.
At the URBiNAT booth, the consortium members showcased some of the creative tools and methodologies that they co-created to pave the way for the development of healthy corridors with nature-based solutions in Porto (Portugal), Nantes (France), Sofia (Bulgaria), Siena (Italy), Nova Gorica (Slovenia), Brussels (Belgium), Høje-Taastrup (Denmark) and Khorramabad (Iran). Living knowledge and a plurality of tools, methodologies, and solutions from a diversity of contexts meet the values of the New European Bauhaus, namely in terms of aesthetics, sustainability, and inclusiveness.
In the booth and in the digital platform of the event, participants had the opportunity to see prototypes, pictures, posters and videos of solutions co-designed with citizens of URBiNAT cities, illustrating some of the participatory activities, tools and methodologies applied, including:
- a living wall co-designed with children in schools of Campanhã in Porto;
- a colouring map for all ages as an artistic synthesis of the local diagnostic of Neder-Over-Heembeek in Brussels;
- a virtual tour of URBiNAT’s intervention area in Porto to help participants to visualise and prepare the co-implementation of nature-based solutions;
- NBS cards consisting of factsheets of nature-based solutions as part of URBiNAT’s catalogue;
- mapping, dreaming and gaming participatory tools to reveal the main assets of a neighbourhood and introduce to participants the concepts around nature-based solutions;
- a photographic project to follow the construction of the healthy corridor in Porto.
It was also the occasion to make known some of our co-creation stories for an inclusive and innovative urban regeneration, such as: the aims and methodological approaches of the URBiNAT project; the public participatory event in Porto that called the local community for co-creation; the media campaign in Nova Gorica to inform and involve the residents in feeding the local regeneration project; the communication campaign in Nantes to invite reflection and action among inhabitants about a green loop; different testimonies of citizens from the URBiNAT cities who participate in the local living labs.

The URBiNAT consortium members also organised the workshop “Healthy corridors: let’s co-create together aesthetics, sustainability, and inclusiveness!” on the 10th and 11th of June. We invited participants for a hands-on experience, sharing their knowledge and creativity to co-create a collective dream for a healthy corridor.
This co-creation pathway gave an overview of what has been inspiring URBiNAT Consortium members to promote communication and interaction with the participants of living labs in URBiNAT’s intervention areas: understanding and connecting with the neighbourhoods by valuing the experience and knowledge of residents as solution holders who can make changes last, focusing on the involvement of and reaching who must be included in reimagining our cities inspired by nature.

The first edition of the New European Bauhaus Festival enabled URBiNAT consortium members to connect with many initiatives funded by the European Union that were exhibited together. We share the same ambition of an inclusive and innovative urban regeneration. In our understanding and experience of the event, it constitutes a paramount moment to deepen and celebrate the intersectoriality, interdisciplinarity and interculturality of the New European Bauhaus.
Thank you for visiting us, keep in touch, and stay tuned through our community of practice!
