The 1st conference of the Global Action will take place virtually from 13 to 16 September 2021, from 13:00 to 16:00 CEST, under the title The Social and Solidarity Economy: from the Margins to the Mainstream. It will bring together hundreds of policy makers, practitioners, and experts in the social and solidarity economy to:

• Learn more about the issues to consider when designing legal frameworks and measuring social impact, including new OECD research in these fields.

• Discuss new OECD evidence on the role of social and solidarity economy organisations in rebuilding better, by raising their visibility and providing the tools to achieve social impact.

• Network with other international practitioners, experts and policy makers, during highly interactive roundtables, breakout sessions and digital app networking features.

In 2020, the OECD launched the Global Action Promoting Social and Solidarity Economy Ecosystems.

Growing inequalities, persistent unemployment and environmental imperatives have come to the fore as priority policy issues, even more so with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) organisations including social enterprises can be part of the solution. These put people at the core of their economic mission and business model, while also considering social and, often, environmental issues a priority. For this reason, they are well situated to address inequalities and help build more inclusive and sustainable economies and societies.

However, despite growing awareness that the social and solidary economy can be a strong vehicle for change, many countries struggle to develop conducive ecosystems to help it thrive. An absence of legal frameworks and limited knowledge of SSE size and social impact still makes it difficult to tailor policies to support SSE organisations.

By addressing these critical policy issues and sharing access to good practices at the international level, this project works to ensure that national and local authorities support and stimulate the social and solidarity economy to unleash its full potential.

The Global Action is funded by the European Union’s Foreign Partnership Instrument.
