A warm welcome on board to our new Latin American Observer City!
Within the framework of the events organised on the occasion of the Open Government Week, which took place from 17 – 20 May 2022 in Brazil, the City of São Paulo officially joined the URBiNAT project as Observer City.
After some initial contacts, cooperation has been stepped up between URBiNAT and the City of São Paulo. The Brazilian municipality already closely followed a series of seminars on co-production and co-governance of NBS, organised together with the Commission for Ecology, Environment and Animal Protection in Paraná (CEMPA). The URBiNAT Consortium is delighted to welcome its new Latin American Observer City and is looking forward to fruitful and lively exchanges!
Being among the pioneers committed to open government, the City of São Paulo has, since 2013, taken important steps to develop open government initiatives. São Paulo’s Open Government Programme is the city’s initiative to create lasting social impact and transformation by strengthening the open government tenets of transparency, accountability, civic participation and co-creation, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The City of São Paulo and URBiNAT share common values and goals regarding the importance of co-creation and participatory processes in the transformation and the socio-environmental impact of communities. Putting the participative and co-creative tools and activities of both the City of São Paulo and URBiNAT at the heart of this collaboration promises great mutual benefit for all partners working towards sustainable and conscious urban interventions, citizens’ well-being and social engagement.
About the Open Government Week
The Open Government Week is an annual international event promoted by the Open Government Partnership (OGP) among 79 national members and 56 local governments from around the world. For this fourth edition of the Open Government Week, three Brazilian local governments (Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Osasco) proposed a joint 4-day agenda (17-20 May) of roundtables, panels and workshops with discussions on social participation, transparency, innovation and the fight against corruption.
Panel N° 6 on “Localising the Open Government Agenda” discussing strategies for localising the Open Government Agenda in states and municipalities has been chaired by Beatriz Caitana from the URBiNAT project.
About URBiNAT
URBiNAT is a 5-year EU Horizon 2020-funded project (2018-2023) targeting the regeneration and integration of social housing and city areas through co-creation of healthy corridors consisting of innovative and flexible NBS.
In partnership with an international network of cities, the project proposes new models of urban development in the public space encouraging positive social interactions and fostering social cohesion in ways that enhance the well-being of the citizens. The cities of Porto, Nantes and Sofia act as “frontrunners”, due to their innovative use of public space with nature-based solutions (NBS). The cities of Siena, Brussels, Nova Gorica and Høje-Taastrup, acting as “followers”, share and replicate the URBiNAT concepts and methodologies. Moreover, the project collaborates with a network of non-European cities, such as Khorramabad City in Iran and São Paulo in Brazil, acting as “observers”.
